It is situated in the heart of Ieper (Ypres) near to the Market Square (Grote Markt) and opposite the Cloth Hall, where the Tourist Office and In Flanders Fields museum are located. The apartment is only a few minutes' walk from the restaurants, bars, shops and public transport in the Market Square. It is possible to take breakfast in a tearoom (called: "Ravani"), just in front of the apartment on the Market Place (in summer on the terrace). If breakfast is required in the apartment it is possible to make arrangements for this when booking.

The house was formerly an antique shop called Le Chat Noir. After the renovation the name was kept because the black cat is one of the symbols of Ypres. It derives from the famous tradition of the Cats Festival in Ypres which is held every three years. It was formerly owned by Doctor Keignaert. It is situated in the street facing the western end of the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing and is only a few minutes' walk from the Grote Markt (market square) of Ypres, with its numerous shops, restaurants and cafés. In 2006 it was fully renovated into The Salient School Hotel. The oldest tree in Ieper grows in the garden. An old textile factory is connected to the house which now serves as a large dining room. It was then used as a hostel for British soldiers and in 1952 was turned into a restaurant. The Poppies is now a B&B hostel run by Stefaan Vanderstraete of the B&B Hostel Menin Gate. The accomodation has a very rich history and has managed to preserve its unique identity throughout the years.
