Battle Study

The main feature of the site is a detailed study of The Second Battle of Ypres, which took place in the northern sector of the Ypres Salient. It began on 22nd April 1915 as a surprise offensive on the Allied front line by the German 4th Army. On that day the sunny spring afternoon was suddenly shattered with a devastating and frightening new development in modern warfare: poisonous gas.

The story of the gas attack is told from both the Allied and the German sides of the wire. With the aid of Map and Timeline windows, 3D maps and previously untranslated material this study offers fascinating details of the battle.
