Moina Belle Michael was born near Good Hope, Walton County, Georgia on 15 August 1869 and grew up in a rural and religious community. Her father, John Marion Michael was a veteran of the War between the States, having served with the Confederate States Army. He saw action in some of the largest and most important actions of the war.

The Michael family was originally from Bretagne, France, and the first member of the family to settle in Georgia arrived in 1791. Moina's mother, Alice Sherwood Wise was from a famous Virginia family.

At the age of 15 Moina began her career as a teacher, spending time in every section of the educational system in Georgia, teaching in county, town, state and church schools.

In later life she had become one of the outstanding educators of Georgia and was associated with the leading professional education associations.

After 54 years in education she retired from the University of Georgia in 1938 after a year of prolonged illness.

Moina Michael died on 10 May 1944.
